When you look at a variety of industries, there are often jobs that are done behind the scenes. Healthcare isn't an exception to this. This month, we asked Lindsey Sell, our Compliance and Privacy Specialist, to answer some questions on the work she does here at Murray County Medical Center.
What exactly is compliance and why is it important?
Compliance in a nutshell is “following the rules” or “doing the right thing the right way” and as a compliance officer I am essentially the “rule enforcer.” But at Murray County Medical Center (MCMC), compliance is about much more than just following the rules. It is about ensuring that our patients receive safe, high-quality care while protecting their privacy, rights, and trust. Compliance touches every area of our organization, from the hospital and clinic to business operations, billing, and information security. As Compliance and Privacy Specialist, my role is to help ensure that we continue to meet those standards every day.
Your work isn't connected to just a single part of the facility, such as the clinic or the hospital. How do you keep track of everything in each area?
One of the things I enjoy most about compliance is that it allows me to work with every department across MCMC. Compliance isn't limited to one area, it touches patient care, registration, billing, human resources, information technology, quality improvement, and more.
To stay connected, I regularly collaborate with department leaders, participate in meetings, review policies and procedures, monitor regulatory updates, conduct audits, and spend time throughout both the clinic and hospital. Building relationships with staff across departments is critical because compliance is truly a team effort. Everyone plays a role in identifying risks, asking questions, and helping us maintain a culture of integrity and accountability.
Obviously, in healthcare things are constantly changing. How do you manage to stay on top of the constant changes?
Healthcare regulations change frequently, and keeping up with those changes is one of the most important aspects of my role. I stay informed through professional organizations, regulatory agencies, educational webinars, industry publications, and ongoing training. I also work closely with our partners and resources that help us monitor updates related to HIPAA, Medicare and Medicaid regulations, patient privacy, fraud prevention, accreditation standards, and healthcare compliance requirements.
The key is to view compliance as an ongoing process rather than a one-time project. When changes occur, we assess how they affect MCMC and work with leadership and staff to update policies, education, and practices as needed so we can continue providing safe and compliant care.
How does your work benefit our patients?
Many aspects of compliance happen behind the scenes, but they have a direct impact on patient care. Compliance helps protect patients' private health information, ensures that care is delivered ethically, supports accurate billing practices, and promotes adherence to healthcare laws and regulations. It also helps ensure that patients are treated fairly, their rights are respected, and that our organization remains focused on delivering safe, high-quality care.
At its core, compliance helps build trust. Patients should feel confident that their information is secure, that healthcare decisions are made in their best interest, and that MCMC is committed to doing the right thing every day.
What's the best part and most challenging part of your role?
The best part of my role is the opportunity to work with so many different people throughout the organization. I enjoy helping staff solve problems, answering questions, providing education, and supporting processes that ultimately benefit our patients and community.
The most challenging part is balancing the complexity of healthcare regulations with the realities of rural healthcare. New laws, regulations, technologies, and reporting requirements continually emerge. It can be challenging to keep pace with those changes while maintaining practical processes that support patient care. However, that challenge is also what makes the work rewarding because each day brings opportunities to learn, improve, and strengthen our organization.
Is there anything else you'd like our patients and community to know?
I want our patients and community to know that compliance is ultimately about trust. Every member of the MCMC team is committed to providing care with integrity, professionalism, and respect.
As a rural healthcare organization, we have the privilege of caring for our friends, neighbors, and family members. That responsibility is something we take very seriously. Whether it involves protecting health information, ensuring ethical business practices, or maintaining high standards of care, our goal is always the same: to provide excellent healthcare services while earning and maintaining the trust of the communities we serve
