Living in the Midwest, we all have our go-to winter survival tips. Pump your breaks instead of slamming them to avoid losing control. Keep extra warm gear in your vehicle, just in case. Toss in some cat litter for extra traction when things get slick. We know these things, but let's be honest, every time we have our first few snowfalls, it feels like we could use a quick refresher.
As we move into December and settle into full winter mode, we wanted to share a few reminders on how to stay safe and avoid falling while walking outdoors. After all, no matter how cold or snowy it gets, most of us still have to step outside at some point.
Wear Appropriate Footwear
When picking your boots or shoes for the day, choose ones that have non-slip soles and good traction. Smooth soled shoes can make it more difficult to keep your footing while walking which increases your chances of slipping.
Walk Slowly & Carefully
Training yourself to have shorter, slower steps will allow you reduce your risk of falling.
Use Support When Able
When getting out of your vehicle, hold onto the door or another stable surface especially in the event that ice is present. While trudging up the stairs, always use the handrails as a little extra support can help prevent any small slips turning into a big fall.
Keep Your Hands Free
If your hands are full, it's harder to catch yourself if you slip. Try to avoid carrying too much and try not to keep your hands in your pockets so you can react quickly if necessary.
Try the Penguin Walk
In slick conditions, the "penguin walk" can help you stay upright. Take short steps with your feet flat and pointed slightly outward, keep your knees slightly bent, and hold your arms at your side for balance. While you might feel goofy using this technique, it works!
Sometimes it's important to slow down and take the small steps to help us avoid injury. All of us at MCMC hope that you each have a safe winter!
