This month let’s focus a bit more on supporting the seniors in our lives in living independently and comfortably at home.
First and foremost, let’s create a safe and accessible home environment as it’s crucial to their well-being. Start with minimizing tripping hazards by removing loose rugs, securing cords, and maintaining proper lighting. Look into installing grab bars in the bathrooms and handrails on the stairs. You can also evaluate what items they use most frequently. You can then move these items to be in the easiest reach possible to make their day-to-day life a little more efficient.
Healthy lifestyles are important at any age. What can we do to maintain that? Staying active is an amazing start to this. Encourage regular physical activity such as walks, chair exercises, or gentle yoga. We want to make sure their bodies stay nourished also. Make sure you help them focus on having a balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Lastly, staying connected with them as social interaction is vital! Schedule regular family meals, video calls with some of their friends, or visits to places they enjoy in your community.
Technology is something many of us have grown up with and understand exactly how it all works. The seniors in our life don’t always have that advantage. Technology can provide a lot of benefits including staying connected with loved ones, setting medication reminders, and ordering groceries. Help the seniors in your life embrace and understand technology by bridging that digital divide. If they have a smart phone, tablet, or computer, it takes time to help them understand how it works. Encourage the use of medical alert systems and explore the benefits that smart home devices might have for their safety and convenience. By understanding technology better, you can help empower seniors to recognize and avoid common scams.
