When it comes to moving to a rural community, it can take a little bit to find your place. It’s one of the big reasons we try to help new staff members, including providers, feel comfortable as they adjust to small town life. We want them to feel welcomed within the facility and out in the community.
As important as credentials and educational background are, it’s not always just about that. Many community members in close knit communities want to get to know their healthcare providers outside of the structured walls of a clinic setting. This can help them feel more comfortable talking with the provider when they come in for an appointment.
Dr. Lawrence Sanchez has been a cheerful, knowledgeable addition to Murray County Medical Center. He prioritizes educating his patients and making them a part of their healthcare decisions so that way they have a more active role in their health. Dr. Sanchez moved to Slayton with his wife, son, and two dogs.
When asked about how he enjoys living in Slayton, Dr. Sanchez stated
“I have been able to enjoy quite a few of the community events and have found the community to be very welcoming. The feeling of being part of the community is something I did not have in Indiana, so it is making the transition back to rural life and small town living easier than I expected. I do enjoy all the events that I have attended- fair, car show, etc. My family has enjoyed attending these events as well. Being able to do activities as a family is a bonus in my career. I’m glad to have the balance of job and family in our community”
Does he have any favorite things to do in Murray County so far?
“I've only been living here for about 4 months, so attending community events and visiting with family has been a majority of what I do. I like the fact that my son and I can go to a playground and feel safe. We usually always find others at the playground which my son loves!”
In regard to healthcare, what does he enjoy most about healthcare in rural communities?
“I like the fact that I can take care of the entire family-kids to elderly. Being a provider for all of the family has always been a part of my career that I truly find it meaningful-whether it is celebrating a birth or mourning a death-it all has to do with my goal of "taking care of the family". I find as I make friends with people I start caring for their family members. A good friend of mine will warn you "Dr Larry is all business when that door shuts, but can be tons of fun outside of the clinic".”
Why are routine check-ups important?
“Routine check-ups help discover and find conditions when they first start-caught early can possibly find a solution before it becomes a bigger health concern. They also establish a person’s baseline that can be compared to when a person is sick.”
What advice would Dr. Sanchez give someone who wants to start making healthier choices?
“See your healthcare provider to determine if you have any medical conditions that need to be controlled before making healthy choices- that way you are not disappointed when the changes you make do not show any results.”
Dr. Sanchez wants people to know that the focus of his practice is to help people have a better quality of life. He makes sure that he has time to listen to their concerns and be able to ask questions. He’s looking forward to many years of practice here at Murray County Medical Center and raising his family in Slayton.
