Swing Bed Care at MCMC

What It Is and the Benefits Involved

After an acute hospital stay, your care team may recommend ongoing skilled services in a healthcare setting to help better prepare you for your return home.

Swing bed patients can only be admitted directly from an acute care hospital setting (you cannot be discharged to home first).

Skilled services include:

  • Physical Therapy
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Speech Therapy
  • IV Medication Administration
  • Wound Care
  • Ongoing Education and Training

Benefits of Swing Bed Care:

  • More Immediate Access to Labs and Xray Services, if needed
  • 24/7 Nursing Staff
  • Low Patient-to-Staff Ratio for more Personalized Care
  • Easy Access to Provider Assessments
  • A Multidisciplinary Team to Create an Individualized Discharge Plan that Meets your Needs

The average length of stay in a swing bed is 10-15 days. There is no defined number of days required to stay in swing bed. If you and your care team feel you are ready to safely return home, you can be discharged when it is convenient for you.

Ask your care team about a referral to the swing bed program here at Murray County Medical Center next time an acute hospital event occurs. We are happy to serve you and your care needs.

Megan Johnson, RN Case Manager
